The Ordered Cosmos

About 530 BC, Croton, southern Italy

All is number

Pythagoras of Samos and his cult in Croton

You told me your life path is 1 and your mother's is 11. This is the guy that whole habit traces back to, and he never wrote a word down.

Charles, you said the whole thing made so much sense it was scary. Here is where it starts, and the start is a man who left behind zero writing and a cult in the heel of Italy.

Pythagoras wrote nothing, or nothing survived, and everything we know comes from people a century or two later, some of whom were clearly improving the story. So I am going to give you the version I can defend, and I will flag the legend when it shows up.

The string

Take a guitar string. Pluck it. Now press it at exactly the halfway point and pluck again. Same note, one octave up. Press at two thirds and you get the fifth. Three quarters, the fourth. Every bar band in history already knew those intervals by ear. What Pythagoras noticed, or what his people noticed and pinned on him, is that the intervals are ratios of small whole numbers. Two to one. Three to two. Four to three. Something you hear with your body turns out to be something you can count on your fingers.

That is the whole revolution, and it is a bigger deal than it sounds. If music is secretly arithmetic, what else is? His answer was everything. The world is number. Not described by number. Made of it.

The part where the planets sing

The brotherhood pushed it as far as it would go. The planets move at speeds in those same ratios, they said, so the sky is permanently playing a chord. Aristotle wrote the idea down and also wrote down the obvious comeback, which is that nobody has ever heard it. Their answer: you have been hearing it since the day you were born, so you have no silence to compare it to.

That is a garbage argument and I love it. It kept the music of the spheres alive for two thousand years, long enough for Kepler to try to write out the actual notes. That is a later essay and it is my favorite one.

Your numbers come from here, sort of

The Pythagoreans thought numbers had personalities. One was unity and the source of everything. Two was the first split, and they called it female and unlucky, because it was 530 BC. Three was the first real number because it has a beginning, a middle and an end. Four was justice. Ten was perfect, because one plus two plus three plus four is ten, and they drew it as a triangle of ten dots called the tetractys and swore oaths on it like it was a Bible.

Read that list again. You already know it. Every system that gives a number a character, including the one that makes you a life path 1 and your mother an 11, is descended from that triangle of dots.

Now the honest part. The system that reduces your birthday is called Pythagorean numerology and Pythagoras had nothing to do with it. It was assembled in the United States in the early 1900s by writers like L. Dow Balliett, who borrowed his name because the name sold. He never reduced anybody's birthday. What he did was stranger and bigger: he decided that if you did reduce it, the answer would mean something, because number is what reality is made of.

Why he is first on the shelf

The question this whole site asks is whether the universe is ordered and whether we are inside the order. Pythagoras is the first serious yes. The order is mathematical, he said, and I can prove it with a piece of gut stretched over a box. Then he added that the order is also musical, which is a claim about meaning, not measurement, and those two halves of his answer have been pulling apart ever since.

Physics took the first half and built everything you own with it. Astrology, numerology and the whole esoteric shelf took the second half. Both sides name him as a founder and both are right. The man who wrote nothing left the two biggest footprints in Western thought, pointed in opposite directions, and you have one foot in each. So do I.

Plato read these people closely and gave the numbers a body. That is next.
